Greetings from the Land DownUnder.
Four years ago we moved from the Big Smoke to live on two and a half acres of Australian bush just outside (well, twenty minutes of driving outside) of the rural township of Bacchus Marsh in a pocket of houses that border a conservation zone.
To picture Bacchus think market gardens and orchards: apples, peaches, pears etc. To picture us think asphalt road with no footpaths or streetlighting, and a minefield of Bull Ant nests all along the walking path that wends through the protected Mallee trees. Think cows at the end of the road. Think that the end of the road is a good hours' walk away and you're doing a great job of getting the picture.
Incidentally, Bacchus Marsh is not, as you might like to fancy, named after the God of Wine specifically and Good times in general, but a certain Captain Bacchus who was stationed here and who I think (although my history is very dodgy on this topic) decided to settle here. And yes, it was a Marsh. So much for the poetry of place names.
